I. The Federal Government 30% Rebate Scheme |
The 30% Rebate is available to everyone who is eligible for a Medicare card or is listed on another person's Medicare card.
The 30% Rebate is not means tested.
It applies to private hospital cover and also to extras (ancillary) cover.
From 1 April 2005, the Federal Government Rebate is extended to * 35% for those aged 65 to 69 * 40% for those aged 70 or over. |
II. Lifetime Health Cover |
Lifetime Health Cover is a federal government initiative designed to encourage people to take out private hospital cover at a younger age and maintain it throughout their lifetime.
You have until June 30 after your 31st birthday to take out private hospital cover, otherwise you may be required to pay a loading on top of the base cover rate. The loading is 2% for each year you delay joining, to a maximum of 70%. |

III. 1% Medicare Surcharge Levy |
This initiative was introduced in order to encourage higher income earners to take private hospital cover and free up the public hospital system for critical emergencies and people on lower incomes. A 1% Medicare Surcharge levy applies to singles earning over $50,000 a year, or couples or families with a combined income over $100,000 a year. The income threshold increases by $1500 for the second and each subsequent child. Income includes salary and wages, plus the value of leviable fringe benefits. If you earn more than these amounts you are exempted from paying the levy immediately after you take out private hospital cover. The cover you take may not have an excess higher than $500 for singles and $1000 for families.
Extras cover only does not exempt you. | |
